Soccer fans in Elmina in the Central Region will glow in ecstasy when Elmina Sharks welcome former league champions, Aduana Stars, at the Nduom Sports Stadium in their first Ghana Premier League (GPL) match on Sunday.
It certainly will be a sight to behold at the 20,000-capacity stadium when the Fearsome Sharks play their first home match after missing a chance to rub shoulders with defending league champions, Wa All Stars, who were engaged in a CAF Champions League match against Al Ahli Tripoli.
Aduana Stars walk in to Sunday’s game with a hard fought 1-0 victory over AshGold and nothing short of victory for the Dormaa-based side will be entertained in the den of the Sharks.
Coach Kobina Ammisah will be relying on the experience of newly signed former Liberty Professionals shot stopper, Francis Arthur, and Ebo Mends. Former AshGold player, Anthony Yerful, and mercurial midfielder, Kofi Abanga, who joined the club on a free transfer, will be vital to the success of Elmina Sharks.
Accra Hearts of Oak will return to the Accra Sports Stadium for the second league match of the season against Medeama Sporting Club. The Tarkwa-based side pipped West African Football Academy (WAFA) by 1-0 at home to guarantee a glimmer of hope against the Phobians.
A goalless draw game against Inter Allies was certainly not what fans of Hearts expected at the El-Wak Stadium, Accra on opening day.
Hearts struggled to break the Tema-based side, a situation newly signed Scottish Coach, Frank Nuttal, will be expected to improve on to catapult the Phobians in their quest to win the league again.
Asante Kotoko coach, Zdravko Lugarusic, will seek to have a double over Berekum Chelsea when the duo clash at the Berekum Park. A replication of the team’s impressive form against Liberty Professional will play a key role against a wounded Berekum Chelsea side who lost by 2-1 against Tema Youth.
Kotoko will miss the services of inspirational captain, Amos Frimpong, through injury while Obed Owusu has also been ruled out through a hamstring injury he sustained in the last pre-season friendly against Natcoster FC.
Debutants, Bolga All Stars, will square off against Wa All Stars in an all northern encounter while veteran coach, Bashir Hayford, will lead his charges at the Len Clay Stadium as AshGold host Great Olympics.
Ebusua Dwarfs will travel to Sogakope to face West African Football Academy (WAFA) while Liberty Professionals will seek to bounce back from their defeat against Kotoko when they take on Inter-Allies at the Carl Reindolph Park in Dansoman, Accra.
