Election Rigging Allegations Against EC Baseless

Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante has dismissed speculations that the Electoral Commission intends to rig next month’s general election.

On Thursday, presidential candidates of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), People’s National Convention (PNC) and National Democratic Party (NDP) expressed fears that the EC was using oppressive tactics against them, citing their initial disqualification on October 10 as an example.

According to the parties, the EC was using the regulations guiding the conduct of the 2016 elections “as an oppressive tool” to punish and deny them equal opportunity to campaign during the critical times of the campaign season.

But speaking after the Inter Party Advisory Committee meeting, Rev, Prof. stated that although the aggrieved parties were present at the meeting with the EC, they did not raise the issue suggesting otherwise.

“When they came out in public, I would have thought that they would raise it here. There was nothing like that. They have discussed the way they going to go about it and I never heard anybody thinking that somebody was going to rig the elections,” Chairman of the Christian Council said.
