Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Rev. David Nenyi Ampiah-Bennin, has advised the public not to lynch armed robbers but rather hand them over to the police.
According to him, killing armed robbers will not serve any ‘useful purpose’ as it rather puts burden on the society.
He, therefore, charged the public to report them to the police since their arrest can lead to the arrest of a gang.
“We all know these robbers are in a league together so just one arrest can lead us to arrest other members,” he stressed.
The police commander gave the advice during his maiden meeting with media personnel and senior police officers in the Central Region on prevention of crime.
The meeting, which marks the first since he assumed office as regional commander a month ago, was to court media engagement in crime fighting in the region.
He indicated that crime prevention will be his focus, and added that he will adopt 0clear measures and strategies to fight crime.
The commander explained that his outfit will concentrate on public education, police visibility and assessment.
“This will take the form of outreach programmes at lorry stations, community durbars, school, market places, churches and media discussions,” he added.
DCOP Ampiah Bennin further explained that his outfit will be using officers in the various departments as resource persons to educate the public on topics such as domestic violence, human trafficking, road traffic regulations and criminal investigations among others to sensitise the public on their role as citizens in helping the police to combat crime.
He added that his outfit will also make sure intelligence led swoops are conducted periodically to apprehend criminals from their hideouts.
“With the increase in highway accidents within the region, the police are going to be at vantage points to manage traffic, check over speeding as well as reckless driving. Town patrols will also be increased from six to ten with police visibility given a bigger boost,” he said.
