Ghana Football Association (GFA), in collaboration with GN Bank, has launched the 2016/17 GN Bank Division One League (DOL).
The launch, which came on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, Accra, witnessed a sponsorship package of GH¢793,500 from GN Bank, a member of Groupe Nduom
The Division One League received its biggest boost since its inception after the Ghana Football Association in 2015 signed a deal worth 2.1million Ghana cedis with GN Bank to sponsor the league over three seasons.
The marriage between the two bodies which has entered its third year has seen GN Bank continue their commitment to enhance grassroots football across the country, particularly in deprived communities.
Speaking at the launch, General Manager in charge of Operations of GN Bank, Mr. Allen Quaye, who expressed satisfaction at the turn of events last season, pledged the bank’s commitment to supporting the DOL again this season.
With a capital injection of GH¢793,500, Mr. Quaye disclosed that this season’s league which is scheduled to begin on February, 3, 2017 after a final approval by the Club Licensing Board will reaffirm the bank’s commitment of being the bank that serves the needs of the people.
Mr. Quaye used the occasion to advise players and management of the various clubs to take advantage and invest in the bank’s products which include Sika Plus and Wo Daakye Accounts to safeguard their future in the sport.
In a short remark at the launch, Chairman for the Division One League Board, Mr. Owuahene Acheampong, assured the public that all challenges experienced last season have been looked at to help avoid any repetition this season.
He said FIFA officials have been invited to look at the match centres which are prone to hooliganism to analyse and sanction clubs who are found culpable.
“We trust that you will exercise the option of renewal so that we will still have GN Bank as our sponsors because we have been very happy with our relationship with your brand.”
A stakeholders meeting prior to the launch was held at the GFA Secretariat early on Friday to discuss various issues concerning the upcoming league, especially issues related to the allocation of match venues and dates.
Though the GFA had earlier announced that the DOL will begin on February 3, 2017 the clubs called on the Division One League Board (DOLB) to extend the commencement for two weeks.
After considering the concerns raised by the clubs, the DOLB agreed to forward their grievances to the Executive Committee of GFA.
DOLB Chairman, Mr. Akwasi Acheampong Owoahene, who spoke at the launch of the league, thanked GN Bank for their continuous support for the league and called on them to renew their sponsorship of the league.
