The Kibi District Commander of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Marian Osei-Adu Owusu, has admonished teachers not to engage in unlawful acts such as rape and defilement since it was punishable by law.
She said as teachers, who were entrusted with taking good care of pupils and students, it behoved them to live above reproach.
According to her, several claims of sexual harassment, including rape and defilement by teachers, had proven to be factual.
‘’Let me tell you, everybody in society can commit these crimes of rape and defilement, which, of course, is totally wrong, but the moment a teacher does it, it raises an eyebrow, simply because teachers are seen in society as distinguished people. This is why your hard-earned reputation has sunk to some extent, and you need to redeem yourselves,’’ the commander stated.
Conference
DSP Owusu was addressing teachers at the East Akim Municipal Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Delegates’ Conference at Kibi in the Eastern Region.
She further advised teachers to be circumspect in whatever they did because “pupils and students have been watching and copying whatever you do as teachers.’’
“And when you fall foul of the law, you will not be spared in spite of the significant roles you play in nurturing children and training human resources,’’ DSP Owusu indicated.
She, however, commended teachers for their hard work and sacrifices over the years, saying; “Anybody who can read, write and speak should thank the teacher.”
Applaud
The East Akim Municipal secretary of GNAT, Mr Sampson K. Adamtey, praised the teachers in the municipality for their commitment to work and discipline on issues of immorality. He also stated that teachers were role models in society and, therefore, were not supposed to indulge in activities that would tarnish their image in the teaching profession.
The Municipal Chairman of GNAT, Mr Patrick Boison, urged the members to help make the association vibrant in the area.
