Would you say the nature of a lady’s dress has the potential to attract rapists? In other words, can a lady be handing out invitations to rapists based on how she dresses?
Well, the subject matter has remained the most trendy topic of the day particularly after Gender minister Otiko Afia Djaba decided to take some time off her busy schedule to interact with and advise students on how to avoid being raped.
Her suggestion, ignore fashion, wear simple dresses that will make it difficult for you to attract people who have the tendency to rape you.
During a speech presentation at the 90th anniversary celebration of the Krobo Girls Presbyterian Senior HighSchool over the weekend, Otiko Afia Djaba urged girls not to “attract” rape by wearing provocative clothing. According to her, though it may be fashionable and trendy, wearing such dresses may have dire consequences of rape and or defilement.
One would ask now, how a comment like this is able to start a social media war with many attacking the Gender Minister for suggesting by those words that ladies who are raped may not be victims of the barbaric act after all.
Question however is, did the Gender Minister err in advising young ladies to dress appropriately?
