Chelsea legend, Marcel Desailly, has been backed to take up the vacant Ghana national team job following the departure of Avram Grant.
Former Chelsea manager, Avram Grant, had been in charge of Ghana for the past two years, but earlier this month he left the role after his contract was not renewed, following the nation’s fourth-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Desailly, who was born in Accra in Ghana, but represented France during his illustrious playing career, has not managed before. But the 48-year-old boasts of a rich haul of trophies which include the 1998 World Cup with Les Bleus.
And speaking about who should be appointed as the new coach of Ghana, coach J. E. Sarpong told UTV: “Marcel Desailly is the right man for the vacant coaching job and I see him as the person who can end our 35-year run without a major trophy when he is appointed.”
“Foreign coaches can’t win trophies for us and so I don’t see the rationale behind their continuous appointments.
“Desailly is not a foreign coach to me because he was born here and only represented France. He has what it takes to lead the Black Stars as he remains the only option that can bring success to us when given the top coaching job.”
Grant led Ghana to the Africa Cup of Nations final two years ago, where they were beaten by the Ivory Coast 9-8 on penalties.
Reflecting on his time in charge of the national team, he said: “I’ve hugely enjoyed my time in Ghana taking over after the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign and rebuilding the squad to reach the final in the African Cup of Nations for only the second time in 23 years, and also the semi-final of this year’s competition.
“And the passion and loyalty of the supporters is something I’ll always remember.”
