Ranking Member on Parliament’s Gender and Children’s Affairs Committee, Hajia Laadi Ayamba has called for the deportation of the Marwako supervisor who dipped a worker’s face in pepper paste.
According to the Pusiga Member of Parliament, this will deter other expatriate employers from abusing indigenes they employ.
Speaking to Class News on the incident which has caused public outrage, Hajia Ayamba, while condemning the abuse, said under no circumstance should it be entertained in the country.
“It is completely inhuman, I’m actually not happy about it at all because I don’t know how such a person was assessed and given a working visa to come to Ghana and not with any expertise but to come and be a supervisor of a kitchen where he doesn’t have that human feeling and can dip a lady’s face into pepper,” she stated.
“We women are very sensitive on our face because we apply all kinds of makeup and we take care of our face in such a way that the skin around our face becomes lighter and worse of it, we are the most vulnerable. …It’s completely unfair, it’s unacceptable. I learnt that he was arrested and later on given bail. Such a person shouldn’t be given bail. He should be dealt with and deported. He should be deported,” the lawmaker said.
Hajia Ayamba also added that such supervisory jobs should be the preserve of Ghanaians and not expatriates.
“I believe that in Ghana, we have people with such expertise in cooking and I also thought some of these menial jobs should be left for Ghanaians. We have a lot of girls there who can do these jobs. We have a lot of women who have done Catering or Home Science as we use to call it in those days who can do this supervisory role that he is doing. So, why should somebody from outside come and do that job when we need jobs for our people? It’s quiet irritating”.
It is recalled that Jihad Chaaban, a Lebanese supervisor at Abelenkpe branch of Marwako Fast Food allegedly dipped the face of Evelyn Boakye, a Ghanaian kitchen staffer, into a paste of pepper for being slow and fidgeting with a blender.
He has since been suspended by the management of the eatery and charged with assault by the police. He was charged with assault on Tuesday, 7 March.
