The Interior Ministry has slapped dusk till dawn curfew (4pm – 6am) on Bimbilla following renewed shooting in the township over the enskinment of a new chief.
The curfew according to 3news.com sources takes immediate effect with security officers patrolling the town and its environs.
On Thursday sporadic shooting was heard ringing through the town forcing residents to run helter-skelter for dear life.
Our sources said the shooting started between two factions over the enskinement of a warrior chief by of the factions.
The opposing faction prevented the new chief from going to his village and this was infuriated the chiefs followers leading to the exchange of gunfire.
The regional police command has deployed officers to the town to maintain law and order. Residents who were home before the shooting began are stuck indoors.
Bimbilla is one of the towns in the Northern region which has a history of constant conflicts. Every now and then a curfew is imposed on the township with heavily armed security officers patrolling constantly.
A curfew that had been imposed on Bimbilla was reviewed a few weeks ago to give them some amount of freedom to go about their business but Thursday’s development has forced the hand of government to impose a new curfew on them.
