Ghanaians woke up on Monday, 31st January ,2017 to a horrifying news that Six (6) kindergarten pupils of the Breman Gyamera Methodist KG School met their untimely death after their dilapidated classroom block collapsed on them whiles teaching and learning was ongoing in the Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa District of the Central Region.
In an interview with Today, Central Regional Communication Officer of the NDC, Mr. Kwesi Dawood urged the GES, NADMO and GETFUND to collaborate urgently and effectively to avert future occurrences, he stated, “It is a wake up call for collaborative efforts between the GETFUND, NADMO and GES to urgently work out a program to have various educational structures with structural defects worked on under a special dispensation with funding from the GETFUND which will go a long way to avert such unfortunate occurrences so far as disaster risk reduction and making our educational institutions safer are concerned”.
Mr. Dawood noted that it was really a tragic blow to lose these children who are noted for their brilliant sense of humour, innocence, living simply and love to make people happy to this disaster.
“They are gone far too soon and struggling to understand what has happened is very devastating because losing someone or kids is very painful but school kids losing their lives through this avoidable and preventable disaster is excruciatingly painful, however, we should not just grief but work towards eliminating the cause of this unfortunate disaster entirely,” he said.
“I am humbly calling on the GES and other relief agencies especially PRS & D, CRS, ARA etc to deploy enough Career Counsellors to the school immediately to help the survivors to cope with the death of their friends, classmates or even siblings whiles calling on our Clergy, Imams, Nananom etc to help the parents and guardians who have lost their precious kids in this disaster to cope with this tragic loss. Seriously my heart goes out to all of those struggling with the tragic death of these KG kids at Breman Gyamera yesterday. I wish I could tell you how to spare your own children and other school kids the pain of this news, both the loss of their friends, classmates and the frightening knowledge that such terrible events can occur, and so close to home. Let’s all try to help the grieving families and schoolmates to express their feelings as we comfort them to make them feel safer. I am a disaster victim myself and knows how the parents are going through right now”, the RCO intoned.
