The Abeka District Court Wednesday remanded a Lebanese branch manager of Mawarko Restaurant located at Abelenkpe, Jihad Thaabn, for allegedly assaulting a female staff.
He is alleged to have dipped the face of one Evelyn Boakye, a caterer at the restaurant, into a blended pepper and locked her up for hours.
He had pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault, offensive conduct and causing harm.
When the accused appeared in court today, the presiding judge Victoria Ghansah rejected his lawyer’s plea for him to be granted bail, explaining that she remanded Jihad for his own security, TV3’s Selorm Amenyah reported.
He will reappear in court on March 16, 2017. He is currently in the custody of the police.
Jihad Thaabn is the brother-in-law of the owner of Marwako Restaurant. The incident has generated huge public interest with many calling for a total boycott of the restaurant with the Minister for Gender and Social Protection taking key interest in the case.
Madam Otiko Djaba even visited the restaurant on Tuesday.
Even though the accused has apologised unreservedly to the victim before the court process started, the apology was rejected by the 25-year-old lady.
