A five-member Supreme Court panel presided over by Justice Anin Yeboah on Thursday acquitted and discharged a 40-year-old former teacher for defiling a child.
Eric Asante had served a 15-year jail term for defiling a 14-year-old girl who was his pupil when he was a teacher in Tamale in the Northern Region.
According to the Supreme Court, the evidence adduced by the State prosecutors 15 years ago against the accused person could not have supported his conviction.
The court directed that Mr. Asante be acquitted and discharged.
It further directed that he applies in a separate application for compensation.
His lawyer, Francis Sosu, says he would apply for GHC10 million (10,000,000) as compensation for his client.
