Disqualified presidential candidate of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Lartey has described the law based on which he was disqualified as a draconian law meant to stop political aspirants from contesting in Ghana’s election.
The CI 94 he posited is an affront to Ghana’s democracy and the rule of natural justice and fair participation.
He suggested for Ghana to adopt the United Kingdom’s form of electoral process to prevent such unfortunate and needless situation in the future.
He said, although I was dissatisfied with my second disqualification, I will not pursue the case in court since I want the elections to be organized peacefully.
Dr. Lartey underscored the need for Ghana to adopt measures to make it flexible for candidates to fairly contest in our elections.
“It is totally wrong, draconian and undemocratic. We should not be encouraging such a process. We have to remove from our statutory books.”
Dr. Henry Lartey when asked his next line of action said, he will assess the policies of all the political parties and declare his support to one that has a similar one to that of the GCPP.
‘’We will be listening to all the political parties, assess their policies and declare our support to the one whose policies are similar to ours. We are a party that support domestication and so we will be listening to all the parties and support the one whose policies are close to ours,’’ he told Nyankonton Mu Nsem in an interview.
Dr, Henry Lartey was disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) for the second time after the electioneering body had vetted his amended nomination forms as ordered by the Supreme Court.
According to the chairperson of the EC, the candidate could not meet the requirements stated in regulations 2 of the CI 94, the legal instrument regulating the 2016 December presidential and parliamentary elections.
