CHIEF of Kwabenya in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, Nii Kwao Obuabasa II has indicated Ga, Gbese and Korle Council’s commitment to rally behind the government to fight against encroachers on the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) lands.
Fuming with anger, the chief warned those in the habit of selling GAEC lands to developers to stop.
Addressing the media at Kwabenya in Accra yesterday, Nii Kwao Obuabasa II cautioned encroachers on GAEC lands to desist from such illegal activities or face the wrath of the Ga, Gbese and Korle Council.
The caution by the chiefs came on the heels of a recent warning issued to encroachers by the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Frimpong Boateng, when he paid a working visit to the Commission.
According to the Minister, he was already familiar with the numerous challenges confronting the Commission, citing the issue of sustainable research funding, sustainable electricity supply, and the current massive encroachment on their lands.
The current crave for the encroachment on lands belonging to GAEC has become a source of worry and very disturbing, as these stifle the smooth operation of the institution.
In view of this, Nii Obuabasa II noted that he and his council of elders have resorted to support the government in its effort to stop the indiscriminate encroachment on lands belonging to GAEC.
“We call on the Minister to engage the Interior Ministry and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to investigate what is happening to salvage the situation,” he stressed.
He alleged some people in the Ga state have become so corrupt that they have resorted to the selling family property, particularly land, for their own parochial interest instead of the good of the people for whom they hold the land in trust.
According to Nii Obuabasa II, the practice of selling land by un-authorized persons in Ga State “has become so rampant that having sold all available free land, those unscrupulous persons now shamelessly resort to nibbling at GAEC lands and other government acquired land, making it impossible for commission to expand”.
He therefore, warned the encroachers to stop their nefarious and anti-social activities and rather help to preserve GAEC lands for posterity.
