Today being Monday, 6th March, 2017 is Ghana’s 60th Independence Day – her Diamond Jubilee!
Ghana had her independence from British colonial rule on 6th March, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan country to attain the prestigious status of independence. This feat was achieved under the energetic leadership of the country’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
The [email protected] anniversary is tagged Ghana: 60 Years On, with the theme “Mobilising for Ghana’s Future”.
Celebrations to mark Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary today will feature a wide array of activities at the historic Black Star Square, Accra – the national venue for the occasion.
Among the most prominent activities are the traditional march past by school children and security personnel, during which President Nana Akufo-Addo will take the national salute.
Another striking event of the 60th anniversary celebration is the [email protected] torch which will lighted with the perpetual flame today. The torch according to President Nana Addo, will embark on a tour across the country throughout the year, returning to it’s starting point on the next independence day – 6th March, 2018.
Meanwhile, so many prominent dignitaries have already arrived in Ghana to celebrate with the nation. Among them are President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, Togo’s president, Faure Gnassingbé, and Vice President of Zambia, Inonge Wina.
Earlier in the year, a Planning Committee was inaugurated to see to preparations for the activities of the Diamond Jubilee. A budget estimate of GHc20 million was also made to cover expenses for the celebration, with GHc10,000 going to each district in the country to facilitate their individual celebration activities.
Yesterday, being Sunday the 5th of March, President Akufo-Addo commissioned the Presidential Museum being developed at the legendary Osu Castle. The museum forms part of the legacy projects being put in place in commemoration of Ghana’s 60 years of independence. The President has also cut sod for the construction of a national cathedral.
