An attempt by a 12-year-old boy, Derrick Oppong Nyantakyi, to draw water from a well resulted in his untimely death when he fell into the well and drowned.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Domeabra, near Agona, in the Sekyere South District in the Ashanti Region, last Saturday.
The Agona District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Francis Akwasi Asante, who confirmed this to the Daily Graphic, said the incident occurred about 10 a.m.
Incident
He said Nyantakyi, who was a Class Three pupil of the Domeabra Presbyterian Primary School, was using a plastic container with a rope attached to it to draw water from the well near his house.
In the process, he said, the weight of the filled container rather pulled the boy into the well.
Mr Asante said screams by the drowning boy for help attracted residents to the scene, but they could not offer any help to the victim who was many metres down the well.
Attempts
Men of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who rushed to the scene succeeded in pulling Nyantakyi out and subsequently rushed him to the Zion Praise Hospital, where he was declared dead.
His remains have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
Mr Asante called on the people to assist the police in their investigations into the circumstances that led to the boy’s death.
