Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.
In Montessori classrooms, children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process.
Are the educational institutions in Ghana tagged Montessori really Montessori centered?
Montessori is a couple of concepts put together to form the Montessori theory in January 6, 1907
It came from Maria Montessori who developed the method and approach.
Research indicates that children enrolled in these institutions are well behaved and have higher IQ scores than their peers in traditional day care centers.
Montessori schools are interchanged for nursery schools and institutions are set up to support early child-hood education.
The Montessori theory differs from the traditional teaching system because it goes beyond a way of teaching to incorporate skills children need to solve problems and effectively collaborate with all types of people in a peaceful, calm atmosphere.
Hence children in Montessori schools learn in a more flexible atmosphere, where each child gains understanding of what they study at their own pace.
However, in Ghana management of such schools recruit teachers who do not have extensive Montessori training or no training at all.
Additionally, there are some schools which practice the Montessori Method of education but without the requisite accreditation.
Director for Montessori Centre Ghana, Soraya Cofie, is worried despite the proliferation of such schools, there is no Montessori regulatory body to ensure the method is fully implemented.
She noted schools bearing the name Montessori attached to some day care centers require accreditation from outside the country.
She stressed the need for a regulatory body to check what goes on in all Montessori schools in the country.
