CONCERNED Youth of Bekwai in the Ashanti Region have called on the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Michael Aaron Ocquaye to sanction the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central Constituency in the Upper East Region, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, for “bringing the name of the House of Parliament into disrepute.”
The youth could not fathom why Mr. Ayariga will make what they described as “defamatory bribery allegation” against Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai Constituency, who doubles as 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Joseph Osei-Wusu.
According to the youth, they have been communicating with Mr. Owusu who is the Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament privately since the news of the allegation broke.
“We trust this is false as declared by a member of the Appointments Committee and Member of Parliament for Asewase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed, on Joy News file last Saturday.
The statement, which was signed and issued by the leadership of the group, Eugene Osei Poku, and Ibrahim Boateng, and copied to Today in Accra yesterday ganged up against any individual or groups that will serve as impediment to the position of Mr. Osei-Wusu.
According to the statement, Mr. Ayariga has not only put his credibility in question, but has exhibited gross disrespect to Parliament and shown the whole world that he has to be a subject of serious scrutiny if such a person was entrusted with the public purse.
“What saddens us the most is that many young people will want to become MPs to serve their country in the near future because of the sanctity associated with this position. Many Youth alike will also want to be legal practitioners because of the decent image associated with the profession,” it noted.
In this regard, the youth called on the Speaker Parliament to impress upon on Mr. Ayariga to retract his allegation, especially on Radio Gold where this allegation was made public.
However, another group calling itself Movement for the Kingdom Image (MFKI), has also waded in and condemned Mr. Ayariga for his ‘wild allegation.’
The group stressed that Mr. Ayariga must be punished for his defamatory comments.
