The Odikro of Obuasi Tutkai in the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwame Kwarteng I says banning illegal mining (galamsey) will be a disaster for the people of the area. He wants the government to rather regulate their activities.
Nana Kwarteng argued, “if the galamsey is halted, it will bring a huge problem to us because it is helping the indigenes”.
The Odikro was contributing to discussions on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene on Tuesday.
Nana Kwarteng added, “we should not allow them to do what they want. Now that galamsey is down, we like it but it should not be banned”.
The Odikro said they have scheduled a meeting on the impending ban on galamsey and the possible revival of the Anglogold concession in the area to create employment for the people.
The Odikro however advised chiefs who give out lands for the galamsey activities to desist from supporting illegal miners.
