SECOND Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowl Kaleo Constituency in the Upper West Region, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has won four of the maiden edition of the national awards dubbed the “Ghana Peace Awards.”
The awards, which were presented to him at his office at the Job 600 building near Parliament House by the Project Manager of Stability Foundation International (SFI), organisers of the Ghana Peace Awards, Rev. Professor Emmanuel Nash, were the Government Peace, Community Spirit Peace, Humanitarian and Service Peace, and Parliamentary Peace awards.
Ghana Peace Award was instituted last year in Accra to honour, celebrate, recognise, appreciate and inspire, individuals, institutions and organisations who have contributed in diverse ways to maintain the peaceful atmosphere the country has enjoyed over the years.
Receiving the awards, the visibly elated Second Deputy Speaker opined that he was surprised when his name came out as the recipient of four of the 32 awards for his contributions to democracy and service to community.
He was of the view that awards like the Ghana Peace Awards would go a long way to encourage stakeholders in Ghana’s democratic development.
In an emotional tone, the Lone Ranger as he is affectionately called by his colleagues reiterated, “I’m humbled by these awards and I am extremely grateful and will want to assure all of you that I will continue to commit my everything to make sure that democracy succeeds in Ghana, and that the benefits of democracy will trickle down to the people.”
Touching on the 2016 general polls, he noted that Ghana received praise globally as a result of its peaceful electioneering processes.
He was quick to add that Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Ghanaians as a whole contributed to the peaceful process before, during and after the elections.
Hon. Bagbin thanked the organisers for instituting the awards, describing it as a “noble initiative.”
The awards, which came in the form of trophies, plaques and citations, were held at the National Theatre in Accra on 29th October, 2016 were in 32 categories.
Others were Man of Peace Awards, Presidential Peace Awards, Leadership Peace Awards Political Peace Awards, Women Peace Awards, Parliamentarians Peace Awards, and Business for Peace Awards, Media Peace Awards Peace & Sports Awards, and Movie for Peace Awards, Youth Services Peace Awards.
The rest were Art for Peace Award, Individual – Benevolence Peace Award, Individual – Community Spirit Peace Award, Corporate Peace Award, Corporate Leadership Peace Award, Individual – Turn Around Peace Award, Peace Education Award, Peacekeepers Award, Peace Philanthropy Award and Multicultural Peace Award.
