The African Union (AU) and Canada have vowed close cooperation and coordination in addressing peace and security challenges in Africa.
This came recently when Smail Chergui, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, met and held talks with Stephane Dion, Foreign Minister of Canada, according to an AU statement later Monday.
The two officials have exchanged views on conflict prevention and mediation, governance, human rights and the rule of law, peace support operations, including the issue of sustainable and predictable funding for peace and security activities in Africa, said the statement.
They have also exchanged views on climate change and its impact on peace and security on the African continent and reaffirmed their commitment to step up efforts in the fight against the scourge of terrorism.
The AU Commissioner for Peace and Security and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have expressed their mutual appreciation for the growth and strengthening of the partnership between AU and Canada.
The two officials have reiterated the importance for AU and Canada to maintain close cooperation and coordination in addressing the peace and security challenges on the African continent.
He has also commended Canada for the donation of 5 million Canadian dollars to support projects in areas including women and girls empowerment, good governance, human rights, renewable energy, intra-African trade, and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The AU Commissioner reiterated his gratitude to Canada for continued support to AU’s efforts in the areas of conflict prevention, crisis management and peace building and close partnership with the UN. Enditem
