A National Security Officer has been shot dead in an armed robbery attack said to have occurred on the Walewale-Gambaga road in the Northern Region on Saturday dawn.
The officer whose name was given by the Police as Martin Wuni, aged 45, was traveling in a Toyota Rav 4 vehicle with a Naval Officer based at the Eastern Naval Command in Tema at the time of the said attack.
According to the Police Wuni was shot at a close range in the rib by the robbers who had barricaded the road.
His body has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
The Naval Officer was said to have managed to escape unhurt and later led the police to the scene of the incident where the body of his partner was found lying dead in a bush.
According to preliminary investigations by the police, the two security men were on their way to Garu in the Upper East Region when the incident occurred.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh told Graphic Online that the Naval Officer told the police he was the one driving the vehicle.
The Naval Officer told the police that on reaching where the robbers had barricaded the road, he decided to reverse but their vehicle fell into a ditch and the armed robbers, numbering four with locally manufactured single barrel gun fired through the rear of the car.
He explained he managed to come out of the car and struggled with one of the robbers, managed to disarm him but the others who came to the defense of their colleague shot into the vehicle.
ASP Tetteh said the Naval officer told the police he fled to a nearby village and got in touch with the police at Walewale who arrived an hour after the incident and in the company of the Naval Officer they searched for Wuni and later found his dead body in the bush.
He said the police have mounted a search for the robbers while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the TTH morgue.
