According to Arik Air General Manager of Public Relations, Mr. Ola Adebanji, the action is a preemptive one necessitated by the outbreak of the Ebola Epidemic in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The airline, which has a strong network across West Africa, has taken this decision in the wake of the Ebola-related death of a Liberian national who disembarked in Lagos.
The Liberian national, whose death was reported by several news outlets was in Nigerian, was on a non Arik Air flight from Monrovia, Liberia, via Lome into Lagos Nigeria,
The Liberian national who died in quarantine whilst in Lagos had been asymptomatic when he boarded his flight which was bound for Lagos, one of the two principal hubs of Arik Air.
The cause of the death of the Liberian Mr. Patrick Sawyer has been created some anxiety among Nigerians, who are concerned about the Federal Government of Nigeria’s ability to contain the spread of the virus from other West African countries.
The company has also encouraged the Federal Government of Nigeria to place an ban on all all inbound flights from countries dealing with the Ebola outbreak.
Although this decision will undoubtedly create a public relations nightmare for the company coupled with some financial loss, the management of Arik Air deems it to be prudent to help safeguard the health of patrons of its business and all Nigerians
