The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated unequivocally that AngloGold Ashanti is not sponsoring its electioneering campaign for the December polls.
It follows a complaint by the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Kwasi Ofori Agyeman Boadi that the mining company is dabbling in local politics due to the emergence of billboards with NPP and AGA logos across the mining town.
The MCE, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East said, the erection of the billboards along the streets of Obuasi has the potential to erode government’s gains in its quest to woo investors to reactivate the dormant mine.
But Kwaku Kwarteng who is also the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West has dismssed the claim that AngloGold Ashanti was dabbling in local politics.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Hon Kwarteng explained that, they only used the logo of AGA on the billboards with the inscriptions, ‘Vote for NPP to Save AGA’ and ‘Obuasi will Rise Again’ to demonstrate their intent to revive all collapsed mining companies should the NPP win power on December 7.
The Obuasi East MP said officials of AGA have drawn their attention to the damage it might do to its corporate image and efforts are being made to take the off the bills boards by Saturday.
This notwithstanding, Kwaku Kwarteng said the NPP will continue to assure the people in Obuasi of a good future under an Akufo-Addo-led NPP government.
