The 2017 VGMAs – 18th edition of the Vodefone Ghana Music Awrds has come and gone, leaving behind its very many spectacular memories in the hearts and minds of all those who were present at the Accra International Conference Centre to witness the grande event which took place on the evening of Saturday, 8th April, 2017.
It was really a night of glamour as musicians who sweated it out in the past year were honoured. As usual, hundreds of celebrities, friends and fans thronged the event venue, expecting to go home with the awards they were nominated for, or just to cheer up winners they have affiliations with, as the case may be.
This year’s VGMA was hosted by Starr FM broadcaster Anita Erskine and powered by Charterhouse Productions, with TV personality Berla Mundi and fashion designer Elikem Kumordzi moderating the Red Carpet sessions. Vibrant performances from musicians such as Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Adina, Kuami Euguene, etc., also added colour to the grande occasion.
Of all the winners at the 2017 VGMAs, Joe Mettle, a gospel artiste emerged the most striking as he swept three big awards at the gala – Artiste of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year! Mr. Mettle made history by emerging the first ever non-secular musician to win the topmost Artiste of the Year award in the history of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
The gospel musician beat 5 other A-list secular musicians nominated for the category in the likes of Sarkodie, EL, Stoneboy, MzVee and Medikal, to win the number one award – The Artiste of the Year. The much coveted award normally goes to the music artiste adjudged by the Academy, Board and the general public as having the highest audience appeal and popularity in the year under review.
We cannot fail to make mention of the very strange action of highlife musician Kwaw Kese, who appeared on the red carpet with all his past VGMAs packed in a wheelbarrow and going with the tag, “AWARDS FOR SALE”. As if that was not enough, he was later spotted with a medium sized power generator in the same wheelbarrow, probably one of the items he had also won at the VGMA sometime. Click here for photos and more details on Kwaw Kese’s ‘madness’ at the 2017 VGMAs.
Meanwhile, Joe Mettle’s outstanding performance at this year’s VGMA has been drawing lots of mixed reactions from music fans both within and outside Ghana, with majority nodding to his feat as well deserving.
Other awardees who pocketed more than a trophy include uprising rapper Kofi Kinaata, female musician, Adina and dance hall star Stonebwoy. Below is a list of all the award winners.
Best collaboration of the year – Alhaji (VVIP)
Female vocalist of the year – Adina (Too Late)
Best group of the year – VVIP
Best music video of the year – Okyeame Kwame
Best new artiste of the year – Fancy Gaddam

Saturday night saw lots and lots of fashion gods and goddesses on the VGMA’s red carpet. While some of them are hits – on point, others are just complete misses! You judge for yourself as you feast your eyes below.
