There is an influx of head porters from northern Ghana into Accra as a result of the removal of the market levy [kayayei tax] by the Akufo-Addo led government, Mr Fred Agbenyo, a deputy communications director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged.
Assessing the New Patriotic Party’s 100 days old government on radio on Tuesday morning, Mr Agbenyo alleged that about 70 per cent of all passenger vehicles moving to Accra from the north in recent times constitute head porters who are trooping to Accra for greener pastures.
This, he said, was because of the removal of the ‘Kayayei tax’ by government; thus enticing the youth to move to Accra quite against what the Mahama led government did by providing them with employable skills.
This, Mr Agbenyo said cannot be said to be an achievement by the NPP government as the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would want to portray.
Mr Agbenyo was speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrookoo morning programme hosted by Kwame Sefa Kayi.
Mr Sefa Kayi challenged Mr Agbenyo to provide proof to back his claim and suggested to him that his listeners were discerning people who do not deserve to be fed with unsubstantiated information.
But Mr Agbenyo insisted that that was information he had obtained.
The NPP’s Director of Communications, Nana Akomea who was on the show, burst into laughter at the suggestion.
