Nana Akufo-Addo is not God, Dr Arthur Kobina Kennedy has said, adding that he will never worship the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as some people in Ghana’s biggest opposition party want him to.
“Some people think I should worship the flag bearer, I don’t worship any human being, I worship God,” the former flag bearer aspirant told Moro Awudu on Inside Politics on Class91.3FM on Thursday, 25 August, stressing that: “… People want you to applaud everything he [Nana Akufo-Addo] does and criticise nothing he does, [but] that’s not me.”
Dr Kennedy has been branded an outcast by his own party due to his constant criticism of the NPP.
In his latest article, Dr Kennedy described as “reckless”, comments made by some lawyers within the NPP such as former Attorney General Nii Ayikoi Otoo, Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea and former Zebilla MP John Ndebugre, in connection with President John Mahama’s remission of the remainder of a four-month jail sentence handed to the Montie 3 by the Supreme Court.
The named lawyers said the remission of the jail term by the president has set a bad precedent and betrayed Mr Mahama as a president for only the NDC. In Dr Kennedy’s view, however, the lawyers opposed to the president’s action have not been fair to history since all presidents in the fourth republic have exercise the prerogative of mercy just as Mr Mahama did.
Refuting allegations that he is a sell-out, Dr Kennedy said: “I have said a lot of positive things about the NPP. When people said Nana Addo was too old, I defended him, it is on record. When they said Danquah was a traitor, I defended him, it’s on record [even] when his own party was silent. I attacked President Mahama for corruption, I’ve attacked him for going to make comments that were derogatory, … I’ve attacked him for asking northerners to vote for him, all these things I’m saying are on the record, so I do not see why anybody should doubt where my bona fides are, but their confusion is stemmed from the fact that while many of them think: ‘it is my party first,’ I think: ‘it is my country first’. I am always going to put my country first regardless of what the issues are and I am also going to call it as I see it.”
