Among the thirty-seven persons appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo into various ministerial positions in his government, ten of them are women.
The number represents twenty-seven (27%) of the ministerial appointees.
The NPP in the 2016 Manifesto promised to appoint at least thirty percent (30%) of women into public office positions.
“The NPP, under the Kufuor-led NPP government, in demonstration of the importance of women and children in the society, set up Ghana’s first Ministry for Women and Children’s Affairs. Today, the NPP remains committed to gender equality and children’s rights and will work assiduously to achieve the appointment of women to at least 30% of available public office positions,” the party said under its Women Empowerment and Children’s rights section of the Social Development chapter of its Manifesto.
With just 37 ministerial appointment, the President is on track to fulfilling his campaign promise of ensuring that women will feature prominently in his administration.
The women appointed are Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Gloria Akufo, Attorney General; Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Local Government; Mrs. Otiko Afisah Djaba, Minister of Gender and Social Protection and Ursula Owusu, Minister of Communications.
The rest are: Catherine Afeku, Minister of Tourism and creative arts; Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister of Special Development Initiatives; Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries and Cecilia Dapaah; Minister of Aviation.
The President had prior to the announcement of these Ministers appointed Mrs Frema Osei Opare as the Chief of Staff.
The NPP and President Akufo-Addo also promised to make women empowerment a priority area under his adminstration.
