There is another looming disaster at Akyem Agyapomaa Methodist Primary School in the East Akyem Municiplaity of the Eastern region following worsening condition of the dilapidated School building, a situation which has inflicted fear among teachers and pupils.
The fear of the school authorities has heightened following the collapse of a kindergarten school building in Breman Gyambra in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District of the Central Region this week which killed six pupils.
Ultimate news’ Kojo Ansah reported that the Agyapomaa Methodist Primary school, with population of about 160 pupils could best be described as a death trap.
The school structure needs urgent rehabilitation or better still construction of new classroom block to safely accommodate school pupils in the area.
Parts of the roof have been ripped off with some of the roof hanging. Also, cracks that have developed in the building have deepen while wooden pillars supporting the building have become weak.
Apart from this, erosion is gradually eroding the foundation of the building making it more unsafe.
The school since its establishment has seen little rehabilitation hence its current state.
The Headmaster of the School, Jonas Kofi Ametepe told Ultimate News’ Kojo Ansah, the condition of the school building is a serious threat to teachers and pupils.
He said, there is the need for government to come to the aid of the school to avert another collapse of a school building.
According to the Headmaster of the Agyapomaa Methodist Primary school, the poor condition of the school building, coupled with lack of teachers bungalow, toilet and urinal facilities and ICT center hinder delivery of quality education.
He explained that, school authorities are compelled to close the school and asked pupils to go home whenever it is about to rain with accompanying storm due to poor state of the school, to prevent disaster.
