The Agric Chamber of Commerce is warning of imminent food shortage in the country if immediate steps are not taken to provide farmers with improved seedlings.
According to the chamber, about 88 per cent of farmers do not have access to these seedlings, hence are unable to expand their farms and also improve on their yields.
President of the Chamber Philip Abayori described the situation as worrying and likely to affect the agric sector and ultimately result in food insufficiency.
“…Seedlings are also important; almost 88 per cent of farmers are not using good seeds and that is also a deficiency that should be checked”.
He thus underscored the need for farmers to be supported and educated on how to help grow the sector.
“The seed sector is weak and needs to be propped up. We do not have the seeds and if it is addressed, and the farmers educated, then it can prevent the seeming food insecurity that is looming,” he stated.
