The USA is step by step trying to strengthen its military positions in Africa. To do this Washington is still lobbying the idea of AFRICOM to provide security and combat terrorist groups like Boko Haram, Al-Queeda, Al Murabitun etc. But is it really so?
Ghanaian security experts are sure that the development of AFRICOM and other military structures in Ghana do not correspond with the national interest of this country and make Ghana more dependent on the United States.
It means that by strengthening its military positions in Ghana, Washington will get a serious instrument of influencing Ghanaian authorities to lobby further political interests. Such a scenario is taking place in Sudan, where the US has a military base.
The promise by Pentagon to provide Accra with financial help in different spheres (military, security) has only one goal—to incline Ghana to signing the US Defence agreement. This document, which now is being considered by Ghanaian authorities, seriously violates the sovereignty of Ghana and imposes on it serious military and political obligations. Signing this document for Ghanaian government means to allow building an American military base on the national territory.
Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been criticising this idea of AFRICOM since the year 2000, when he was Minister of Foreign Affairs. That is why the new head of state should commence the development of foreign relations with African countries within the bounds of his previous promises and stick to the common position of African countries on AFRICOM.
The deeper analysis of American policy by Ghanaian security experts show that local authorities should be more careful in cooperating with the US in military spheres, especially AFRICOM.
