Ghanaians need to be grateful to Mahama. This is according to President-Elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, who challenged the country to appreciate the outgoing president who has ruled the country since the death of its former president, John Atta Mills in 2012.
This according to the incoming president is for Mahama’s show of maturity and statesmanship following his defeat during the just ended general election. Also, Mr Addo said he should also be appreciated for his efforts towards ensuring a smooth transition.
The President-elect made the call at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference who paid him a visit at his Nima residence. He noted that but for Mahama’s willingness to accept defeat, the country would not have been enjoying the peace and stability it is enjoying at the moment.
According to Mr Addo, “I think all of us in Ghana have to be thankful that we have in him [Mahama] a man who is also devoted to the peace and stability of our country.”
He went forth to add that the manner in which the outgoing president is comporting himself as days build to the end of his administration must be commended. This is because it has helped in reassuring the peace and stability of the country, at a time when some African leaders are bent on staying in power after their tenures had elapsed and against the wish of the people.
Also, he took the opportunity to state it that President Mahama has lived up to the challenge of leading the country following the circumstance in which he came to power in 2012.
“He came to the office during a delicate moment in the history of our nation and he stepped up to the bench. He has held the state together,” Mr Addo added.
