The Health of several teenagers in the Eastern Region are being put at risk due to the activities of a quack doctor, who is carrying out life-threatening abortion for desperate women in the municipality.
The self-acclaimed doctor has been operating in the region for years in a community in the Krobo enclave.
Information gathered during investigations into the operations of the ‘abortion doctor’ indicated that he prepares concoctions of herbal medicine mixed with orthodox medicine to terminate the pregnancy of his clients.
The concoction is either inserted or swallowed depending on the period of the pregnancy. It is not clear, the number of pregnant young ladies who have patronised the ‘killer’ services of the ‘abortion doctor.’
A teacher in the community told the Daily Heritage in an interview that most clients of the ‘abortion doctor’ are Senior High and Junior High School (JHS) students and pupils respectively.
Victims of the quack medical practices reportedly suffer life -threatening complications and serious womb damages.
Fees charged by the ‘abortion doctor’ depend on the period of pregnancy. A month old pregnancy attracts GH¢ 100.00, with two months attracting GH¢ 200.00 in that order.
One of the victims, a 17-year-old girl (name withheld) nearly lost her life last Sunday after she was given the concoction by the doctor to terminate her pregnancy.
The victim claimed the doctor collected GH¢ 100.00 and gave her a concoction to insert to abort her one-month old pregnancy which she obliged.
Speaking on her sick bed, the young JHS school dropout explained that, hours after inserting the concoction, she began bleeding amidst severe abdominal and waist pains, worsened by feverishness and general body weakness which nearly made her unconscious.
Her brother in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE said the condition of the victim was getting worse, hence, he was compelled to rush her to a clinic in Koforidua on Sunday for emergency care after she confessed to attempted abortion. The victim is currently responding to treatment.
