They were detained in Accra last Tuesday and granted bail after their caution statements had been taken. This brings the total number of those apprehended to 13.
The Public Relations officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Yaw Nketiah-Yeboah, confirmed the arrest to the Daily Graphic yesterday and said the dockets on the 13 were being prepared by the Regional Police command and would be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for the way forward.
Arrest
Those arrested in Accra are Salu Issakah, 33; Akwasi Owusu, 34; Kwabena Owusu, 46; Kofi Kyei, 40; Agya Boadu, 46; Salu Yussif, 35; Yussif Salu, 32 and Kwaku Awotwe, 40.
The leader of the group, Kwadwo Fosu Bamba, was the first to be arrested in Kumasi a day after the incident. Two days later Awal Sadat Abubakar was also nailed by the police in Kumasi. However, Abukakar Sidiq Abdul Hameed, Jamil Issah and Hamza Mohammed went and reported themselves to the regional police on their own volition.
All 13 have been granted bail.
Reason
The members of the group stormed the offices of the Regional Coordination Council and removed Mr George Adjei from office because according to them, the appointee was nowhere to be found during the electioneering which secured the mandate of the people for the NPP.
In the ensuing melee, a piece of the smashed glasses on windows and door of Mr Adjei opened a deep cut on one of the members of the Delta Force, who NPP members claimed worked for the party in the region to increase its electoral fortunes.
He was whisked away to an unknown destination by his other members of the group.
Condemnation
First to condemn the act was the NPP National Youth Organiser, Mr Sammy Awuku, who said it was unacceptable for them to oppose the President’s nominee in such a violent manner, followed by a founding member of the party, Mr Ayisi-Boateng.
Mr Ayisi-Boateng urged leading members of the party to not interfere with the work of the police in dealing with members of the Delta Force, adding that what the members of the Delta Force did was not in tandem with the beliefs and actions of the NPP, and that such elements must be dismissed from the party.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Peace Council, Prof. Seth Opuni-Asiamah, appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to let vigilante groups within the NPP know that this was not how he wanted to run his government.
