Three persons died on the White Volta at Daboya in the Northern Region while returning from the campaign launch of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate.
Their bodies, all females, have since been retrieved.
Onua News’ Northern Regional correspondent, Zubaida Ishmail reports that the three were part of some supporters who graced Shaibu Mahama’s bid to win Daboya/Mankargu constituency on Sunday.
Information gathered by Onua News suggested that the deceased were crossing the river back to Tamale on a canoe last night.
The death toll could be more as residents say there were more than three persons on board when the canoe capsized. Some were however rescued.
Daboya has two trunk roads that lead to Tamale with the shortest being about 48 kilometers, which also requires the crossing of the White Volta with a canoe.
Some travelers have drowned in their attempts to cross the lake. Meanwhile many more continue to patronize the services of canoes without live jackets.
