Two children are reported dead and several others injured after a KIA truck run over some jubilant supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Suhum Okorase in the Eastern Region on Friday night.
The supporters, who had gathered to celebrate the victory of their Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo in the just ended general elections.
Party faithful and sympathizers had flooded the streets, dancing and chanting to party songs when the unfortunate incident occurred.
One of the injured victims, Linda Quaye told Citi News she joined dozens of other supporters to celebrate the victory in the middle of the road when the truck run over some of them.
She said she was fell and attempted to help others who were knocked down by the truck but the driver reversed and ran over two children, leading to their death.
She accused the driver of deliberately causing the accident saying he sped off after the incident.
The driver of the truck was arrested on Saturday morning and is currently assisting police with investigations.
The Electoral Commission on Friday, December 9 declared the opposition New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo as president-elect after polling about 53.85 percent of total votes cast in the general elections ahead of his major contender and incumbent President, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress’ 44 percent.
Thousands of Ghanaian poured out to the streets across the country to celebrate the victory after the announcement was made by Charlotte Osei, the chairperson of the Commission on Friday night.
Before the official declaration of results, President Mahama called Nana Akufo Addo to conceded defeat and also congratulate him for the victory.
