The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu in the Northern region, Ras Mubarak has started a campaign in the House to hold Speaker of Parliament to his word to make public the voting records of all the 275 MPs.
He argues this will enhance transparency in the proceedings of parliament.
The move was one of the Speaker’s main promises when he was sworn in in December last year.
According to Prof. Mike Ocquaye, the lawmaking chamber needed to showcase the voting pattern of MPs, because it will expose many lawmakers who he argued lack integrity when it comes to debating and voting on national issues in parliament.
The Kumbungu legislator Thursday, tabled the matter on the floor of parliament insisting such records should be made available on the website of parliament of Ghana, which he received support from colleague MPs as well.
“A lot of things are coming up, and they have not come up in the past because of the strict system that we have where Members of Parliament are whipped in line to toe party or government position. But I am the one who will not bulk at defying party position if whatever is being proposed is not in the interest of the people who sent me here to represent them,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
