Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia has given the strongest indication yet that NPP government would pass the Rights to Information Act this year as part of efforts to effectively fight corruption.
The Vice President further indicated that plans are in place to make corruption a felony instead of a misdemeanor which it currently is.
Dr. Bawumia said “President Nana Akufo Addo has reiterated his commitment to fight corruption. Our government has already made it clear that we will be passing the Right to Information Act, we will make sure that a special prosecutor’s office is set up to prosecute corruption and we will amend the criminal code to move corruption from a misdemeanor to a felony.
“These are just some of the actions we intend to implement this year,” said the vice president at the Ghana Anti-corruption conference in Accra with stakeholders from Kenya and Nigeria in attendance.
Corruption has been the bane of many a government and efforts have been made over time to win the fight but this seems to have been a herculean task.
The current NPP administration will get national and international plaudits if they are able to pass the Rights to Information bill, an achievement many governments have failed at.
