Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu says he suspects poor works done on re-roofing of the main chamber of parliament is most likely to be the cause of the terrible scene of leakages that visited the House Tuesday night after a heavy rainstorm.
Although, he said his claim is subjective because one needs to also assess the intensity of the storm last night, he indicated that “the old roof have been there, we’ve never suffered this tragedy until it got removed, they replaced and this is what we’re now seeing.”
Tuesday evening’s storm that accompanied the heavy rains, left the roof of the chamber of Parliament House completely ripped off.
The downpour which lasted less than an hour saw rain dripping into the chamber forcing the Minority side to walk out of the building.
Plastic containers had to be placed at the leaking parts to contain the water and prevent the carpet on the floor being soaked.
Other offices were also equally affected as they were inundated with water.
The severity of the incident attracted the Minister for National Security, Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah and officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) going to Parliament House to access the situation.
However, Mr. Osei-Kyei Mensah said in the likely event that the House is not put in order for business to be carried out today in the Chamber, leaders may arrange for sittings to be done elsewhere within the premises.
“If it may not be possible to hold transaction of business here tomorrow, we can relocate to some other place,” he told Accra-based Citi FM in an interview Tuesday.
