The Street Child Project of the Kumasi Catholic Archdiocese has appealed to Ghanaians to lend some assistance to the needy and street children in the country.
In Kumasi alone, it is estimated that as many as 20,000 children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 18 years roam the streets without care, parental guidance, shelter and other basic necessities of life.
Programs manager for the street child project of the Catholic Church, Miss Jessica Deh in an interview with otec FM reporter Uncle Sam noted with concern the huge challenges they face as a result of the little interest shown by most Ghanaians in assisting street children in the country.
Joining a community of nations worldwide to observe the international street children day which is held each year on the last day of January, Ms. Deh revealed that the project is currently catering for over 100 street children in both JHS and SHS whiles an equal number are also being trained to acquire vocational skills.
“we are training over 100 street children to acquire skills like dress-making and hair dressing at Appeadu near KNUST and other parts of the country including the north” she said.
According to her, the project receives funding to support street children from international donors but it is insufficient because the number of street children keeps increasing.
She therefore called on philanthropists, the affluent and corporate bodies to join in assisting the needy and street children in the country.
Director of the Street children Project of the Kumasi Catholic Archdiocese, Sister Olivia Umoh explained that the project, established by His Emeritus Archbishop Peter Akwasi sarpong is to ensure that children live, grow and are cared for within their homes and not on the streets.
