2016 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, says, the completion of the National Identification (NI) cards will add value to the country’s economy.
According to him, the project will help the country achieve economic transformation.
“Everybody needs to understand that just as the Act says, with the national identification cards we can take care of the economic, social, political and other needs of the country,” he stressed.
The PPP leader made these observations on ‘Ghana, Great and Strong,’ a programme broadcast live every Saturday from 7:00 p.m., – 8:00 p.m., on over 10 radio and 4 television stations across the country.
He indicated that the system will make it impossible for companies that operate in the country to evade taxes.
The veteran politician also noted that the national identification cards will bring sanity into the acquisition of passports.
“You cannot just acquire a passport and then get into trouble and try to secure a new one. In the same vein one cannot acquire a driver’s licence, and after committing a crime with it, throws it away and secure a new one,” he said.
According to Dr. Nduom, the national ID would reduce the long-standing issue of “who is a Ghanaian and further prevent foreigners and minors from voting during elections.”
To this end, he called on Ghanaians to give their utmost support to the NIA so as to make the exercise successful.
Dr. Nduom revealed that out of 15 million Ghanaians who registered for the national ID cards in 2014, only 900 people were issued with the cards.
