15 People Died In the Accident Near Apam; Ford Driver Arrested

Fifteen (15) people, 12 females and three males, have so far been confirmed dead in Sunday’s gory accident between the Winneba and Apam stretch of the Cape Coast highway.

Most of the victims were trapped after a Sprinter Bus collided with an articulated truck that was trying to avoid running into the back of a Ford vehicle that had moved into his lane in the evening.

The driver and mate of the Sprinter also died in the accident, the Gomoa West District Police Commander DSP Cephas Edzeani told Onua FM’s  Kwame Kakarba at Apam Monday morning.

He also confirmed that regional police command has arrested the driver of the Ford vehicle, Francis Donkor, 42, whose “reckless driving” allegedly led to the motor accident that killed 13 people on the spot.

The driver escaped from the scene of the accident which occurred at exactly 4:15pm at Gomoa Mprumeim but was later arrested at Moree Junction towards Cape Coast. The Ford vehicle has also been impounded.

Police say the driver of the Ford bus with registration number GR 1292-11 overtook some vehicles and joined right infront of the articulated truck which was travelling from Accra to Mankessim.

The Driver of the articulated truck, in an attempt to avoid hitting the rear of the Ford bus, veered off into the lane of the oncoming Sprinter bus with registration number GM 1129-16 resulting in a head-on collision.

Eleven people are also in critical condition at the Apam and Winneba Government Hospitals. The bodies of those who lost their lives have also been deposited in the morgues at the same hospitals.
