Former cruiserweight boxer, Joseph Awinongya, believes his nine-year-old son, Joseph “Jojo” Awinongya Jr, could become a world champion in the future if he maintains his current development in the United States.
Awinongya, who currently trains boxers in Will County Boxing Gym in Joliet, Illinois, expects young Jojo to take boxing by storm after being ranked number one in the USA after 16 fights.
Awinongya Jr is the reigning National Silver Gloves champion in the 80lbs division, making him an instant hit at a very tender age. He is now touted as a future great by the bookmakers in the United States.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Awinongya said he was ready to help his son realise his dream of becoming a world champion in the future.
He added that he was keen on seeing Awinongya Jr rise to fame in the United States to serve as a motivation for children in the Ghanaian community.
“My son Jojo is very disciplined and he is making waves in the United States in boxing. At this tender age, Jojo is already talking of being a champion someday and I’m committed to ensuring that he realises his dreams. As a former boxer I have what it takes to guide him to greater heights,” he noted.
“I don’t want him to forget about his roots so it will be ideal to use his rise to fame in America to help motivate the young ones here in Ghana,” he added.
