Vice president of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie says the FA expects newly appointed Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah to bring back the team to winning ways.
The former Al Khartoum trainer was on Tuesday, April 4, appointed the new Ghana coach on a two-year deal.
He replaces Avram Grant who left the Black Stars job after a disastrous 2017 AFCON campaign in Gabon.
And according to the Black Stars management committee chairman, the only thing that can bring back the love Ghanaian have for the Black Stars team is when they are back on winning.
This he says informed the decision of the six member committee set up to get Ghana a new coach to settle on him.
Speaking to Kofi Larbi [Governor] host of Abusua Sports Arena on Abusua 96.5 FM, George Afriyie said ”He should the team back to winning ways, he should help the team to win back these are the most important things we expect him to do as a coach”
Mr. Afriyie in a response to what has changed in Kwesi Appiah since he left the team in 2014 stressed ”What has changed is that it’s been three years since he left, since he left the face of the team has change and things have also not been the same’’.
”let me make this point clear I have heard some of you the journalists say Kwesi Appiah was sacked by the Ghana Football Association after the country’s 2014 worldcup debacle which isn’t the case. The truth of the matter is the FA had a press conference with he[Kwesi Appiah at the Alisa Hotel after the mundial and told him we had fate in him and even renewed his contract so i feed bad when I hear them make such false reports”
He however called on Ghanaians to give the former Asante Kotoko captain their full backing to enable him deliver within the two-year term given him.
Appiah in October 2016 beat competition from contenders including Fawzy Al Mardy who was head coach of title winners Al Hilal Omdurman to win the coach of the year award.
