The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has berated unfounded Ghanaian media reports that it has moved venue for the crucial penultimate Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Cranes and Black Stars next month.
A leading Ghanaian news site on Thursday claimed FUFA sources to have revealed to it that the November 15 encounter has been moved from the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole to the capital City of Kampala [when actually, Namboole is within Kampala] in order to ‘garner massive support’ for the Cranes when Ghana come visiting.
But Uganda Football Association’s media officer Fred Katende has labelled the report as malicious, factually in correct and unprofessional which must be disregarded.
“How can people put up that story, that we have moved the match from Namboole stadium to Kampala because we are desperate for a win?
First they must ask themselves; where is Namboole and where is Kampala? Are they two different cities?
Such reports are malicious and I say they are complete fabrications and total lies, just lies and unprofessional,” Katende lashed at the report in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM.
“In any case, Namboole stadium is in Kampala, just 10 kilometers from the City so if any journalist reports that we have moved the match from Namboole to Kampala then let him just check or ask where the Namboole stadium is located and which other venue again the match has been moved to,” he added.
The FUFA media officer then reiterated the venue of the November 15 clash as the Namboole Stadium and confirmed the kick-off time.
“I can confirm to you that the match is coming on at the Namboole Stadium where we have played all our matches for years, and the [kick-off] time is 7pm Uganda (4pm Ghana).
Nothing has changed,” he said.
He also entreated the media to avoid fabricating such stories that could create fears between Ghana and Uganda ahead of the AFCON Qualifier.
“We came to Kumasi to draw, we have no problems with Ghana so let nobody try to fabricate stories like this just to create fear and things like that,” he concluded.
