Minister for parliamentary affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu is entreating the NPP government to review the current sponsorship deal between the Black Stars and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.
The state-owned oil company took over from Goldfields Ghana Limited as the headline sponsor of the senior national team in 2013, signing a five-year $15m deal with the Ghana FA.
But Mensah-Bonsu, a ranking member of the incumbent government has condemned the state petroleum firm’s use of a 30% of the national kitty on sponsorship on the senior national team alone.
The former minority leader believes the Black Stars has become unproductive, therefore urging the government to review its investment into GNPC and want some of the company’s allocation diverted into other productive sectors of the economy.
Addressing a press on Tuesday, the Suame legislator has questioned GNPC’s decision to pump a huge sum of its investments into sponsoring the Black Stars and paying huge sums to its coaches.
