Top-seed Thomas Yaka Kofi Setodji yesterday made an impressive start to the 2017 McDan Open Championship, outclassing his Ghanaian counterpart Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo 6-1, 6-1 to progress to the last 16 stage of the tournament.
The power of the serves and the returns of the 20-year old Togolese were too hot for Bamfo, which sent him cruising to victory at the Accra Sports Stadium court for the first match of the main draw against Bamfo, a brother of former McDan Open champion, George Darko.
France-based Setodji looked an early favourite for the men’s title on account of his performance, with last year’s champion, Nigeria’s Michael Moses, who is absent this time.
In the other first round clash, Francis Akpese progressed at the expense of Francis Gbolonyo at the end of two entertaining sets which ended 6-3, 7-6 (5).
In a departure from previous editions of the McDan Open, this year’s championship started without an official opening ceremony with players moving directly to the court
The matches were preceded by qualifiers from yesterday which saw eight players joining 24 seeds in the last 32.
Below are the results entire results of the opening day of the 2017 McDan Open Championship;
