Ghanaian welterweight, Frederick Lawson, says he is fit and ready to face Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings on March 11 at the Bukom Boxing Emporium in Accra.
The bout forms part of Ghana’s 60th Independence anniversary celebration and it will offer Lawson and Mullings the chance to win the vacant WBC international silver welterweight belt.
Lawson is returning to the ring a year after suffering a broken jaw in the loss to Canada’s Kevin Bizier in the final eliminator for the IBF welterweight crown which was held by Kell Brook.
“We tried getting this fight for a while and so, I sat with my trainer and manager to go through a few fighters.

“My trainer agreed with me and said that he believed Mullings would make a good opponent especially as I would be making a comeback.”
“I would love to fight him to show what I can do. I am ready and I am fine.”
Mullings has 19 wins and 2 losses in his 21 fights so far but the fight in Accra will be his first outside the Caribbean and Jamaica.
Lawson spoke about his loss to Bizier and recounted how unwilling he was to retire from the bout despite suffering a broken jaw.
He said that the loss affected him and it would stay with him.
“The bout was mine to win that night but something went wrong. I was not comfortable after the third round because of the broken jaw.”
I pushed until the 10th round when the doctor examined my mouth and saw the jaw.
He said I was too young for such pain and so, my trainer asked me to give up.
I did not want to. I thought my fans would see me as a coward but the doctor urged me to retire from the bout. My trainer said that I would get more opportunities in future.
