Ghana’s Lightweight boxer, Richard Oblitey Commey, is set to take on Belgian Hedi Slimani for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silver Lightweight Title.
The bout organised by Streetwise Promotions and Errol Hawks Sports Management forms part of activities marking Ghana’s 60 years Independence Day Anniversary Celebration.
In an interview with the GNA Sports, Commey, said, after losing out on a world title in 2016 against Robert Easter Jr. as well as another important fight against Denis Shafikov in America and Russia respectively, he was bent on creating a new path in his career.
He said he was ready to revive his fortunes in 2017, as he seeks to win a world title for the country.
“I was really disappointed in 2016 for not winning a world title. I believe I did my best, but I felt it was not enough, so I have told myself that 2016 is past and gone now. I am looking forward to a promising year.
“I wish I had won that that title for my country, that was my dream as a boxer, but unfortunately I could not grab those titles for Ghana, but that is boxing, it would not always go your way and you have to accept it and move on.
“This is a new year and a new era for Richard Commey, I am going to contest for the WBC Silver International Title and I urge all Ghanaians to trust and support me.
“I have got the chance to contest for this title because of my previous bouts so people should be calm and keep supporting Richard Commey.
“I am definitely going to be a champion in 2017, I’m going to win the WBC Silver title, which is my first for the year and all my subsequent bouts, so Ghanaians should expect a great year.
“I am not worried about my defeats and there is no pressure on me, because we have got great boxers who were beaten but came back stronger. I am not a failure, I am working hard and I know with the help of God I will live to the expectations.” He stated.
