Former Asante Kotoko midfielder and coach Abdul Razak has backed the club to win the 2016-17 Ghana Premier League title, following an improved performance in the Ghalca G6 tournament.
Michael Osei’s men finished third in the pre-season tournament after defeating Bechem United 5-4 on Sunday.
“Asante Kotoko have a strong team and they can win the league title if only the supporters will have a little patience,” Razak told Goal.
“The team started the pre-season very well and I believe they will be successful this time around. When you analyse games that they played, you will realise that their midfielders and wingers were effective and created lots of chances for strikers.
“If a team scores more than ten goals in just three matches, it clearly shows how good they are and opponents will have to be careful.
“However, I think the coach must work on his defence if they want to win the title. If they score many goals and concede more at the same time, it is not a good sign. Good strikers can punish them when they repeat such mistakes in the league,” he added.
Kotoko last won the league in 2014, finishing second behind regional rivals Ashanti Gold in 2015, after experiencing one of their worst campaigns last season. They finished fifth after battling relegation throughout, leading to the sacking of coach David Duncan.
The 2016-17 campaign was billed to kick off on December 18 but Ghana Football Association’s executive committee member Eddie Doku claims it will be postponed.
